Inquiry about the .io ccTLD situation.

Indeed, Caleb. I discovered it has to do with the recent resolution between the UK and Mauritius regarding the Chagos islands, which means that the IO (which referred to the Indian Ocean Territory) kind of doesn’t exist anymore.

I probably should have fully read the wiki article Jean referred to  ☹ before writing anything. I’m interested to see if anyone sees much in the way of NCSG implications – on the surface I do not, although it is possible that some non commercial entities are included in the more than one million domains. And since it’s not every day that a ccTLD is being considered for phasing out, it should be interesting to observe.

Thanks, Jean, for raising the issue. I hadn’t heard about it even though I knew there was finally a resolution of the issue with the Chagos islands.

As far as dot AI, I believe it’s actually registered to a real country (Anguilla?). So just like dot TV and dot ME, these are reaping income for the territories involved.

On the TLD part, I guessed as much. What I was looking at was the motive. One could assume the same for the dot AI.

While I don't have an opinion on this specific case, just wanted to mention that as NCSG we directly contribute to policies related to gTLDs (as long as they relate to ICANN mandate) but this doesn't mean that we do not and cannot provide advice on ccTLD matters that relate to ICANN.  We can provide advice on ccTLDs  when it comes to delegation and redelegation issues and generally issues related to ICANN and IANA.
