I agree with you Thato. I think that we are not always respectful
enough to be polite, to listen carefully, and to try to explain in
simple terms. Native English speakers are not always respectful to
those who are struggling in their second, third, or fourth language.
Cultural expectations of what constitutes respectful discourse vary
enormously. Those who are working hard on working groups are not always
patient with those who are not, particularly if they see evidence that
the person has not read the documents being discussed. I think it would
be useful to hold such a webinar, but I am not sure that those who are
most apt to be abrupt in their speech would attend.
Let us be clear though, uttering threats and abusing the list to
continue an argument is unacceptable behaviour that falls outside the
acceptable behaviour standards. Rudeness and abruptness are regrettable
but they are in a completely different category. We must all try not to
take offence and escalate these arguments, it causes great problems in
our stakeholder group.
