Dear all,
I am the NCSG representative on Cross Community Working Group (CCWG) on
Internet governance. ICANN has various kinds of groups and structures which
allow for policy and governance discussions. CCWG is one of such groups.
As I informed you a couple of weeks ago, CCWG-IG is discussing its format
and whether its activities at ICANN should be carried out within a CCWG
format or should it be dismantled and take place through other structures
such as a working party instead of a cross community working group. They
had a meeting a couple of weeks ago which I could not unfortunately attend,
but Nigel has taken some notes attached here.
At NCSG meeting we also discussed this as a motion was filed at the GNSO
Council to withdraw GNSO from the CCWG-IG as a chartering organization. We
suggested a friendly amendment and the motion was deferred to be discussed
in the end of August.
The gist of the notes of the CCWG-IG meeting:
1. There will be an CCWG-IG IGF Workshop (
https://www.intgovforum.org/multilingual/) in December. They want to expand
the reach of the workshop to various stakeholder groups and invite others
to contribute. Generally, civil society and noncommercial are pretty well
represented on these panels but some stakeholder groups at ICANN have not
yet participated in organizing such workshops. I think one of the aims of
the group should be to involve the less active stakeholder groups more in
the CCWG.
2. They are talking about dismantling the CCWG-IG and coming up with
another "vehicle" that still offers the benefits of a ccwg-ig such as staff
support for its meetings( that merely means staff to take notes, run adobe,
provide transcripts if need be etc) and that group still be able to have
chartering organizations. (chartering organizations means that the
organizations involved with ICANN -GNSO, CCNSO etc- adopt its charter). But
they are not sure how any other group format other than a CCWG allow for
all these so they will offer some suggestions for the next call.
3. They established a :Small Team to draft the characteristics / mission /
requirements of Group. I volunteered to be a part of the group.
Don't hesitate to contact me if you need more information.
