Dear all,
The Latin Diacritics PDP Working Group just concluded its second
meeting. Discussion was still mainly about scope.
On a positive note, it was agreed that there's no need to limit
consideration to two strings only. So cases like Sjoberg, Sjöberg and
Sjóberg would be in scope.
Otherwise, the Unicode definition of diacritics remains definitive for
the WG, simply because it's well-defined, even if it results in some
odd restrictions like excluding ø while including ö. I argued that
users should not need to know or care about their internal coding, but
let it go with a note of dissent. A recommendation for a future PDP
to deal with those may be coming.
The limitation to a single applicant for all TLDs in question was also
upheld. I would agree that for cases like .quebec/.québec, but don't
see the need in case of words with different meaning, like the
sjoberg/sjöberg/sjóberg case. But I can't disagree that the PDP
charter excludes that - which of course also means that a future PDP
could consider that case separately.
Finally, for those interested, there's a request for early comments
with deadline on 24 April, we might want to respond to it:
