"Online Presence" i.e building on other domain names is not the same as "Online Identity" with a DNS.

Presence Vs Identity is also a philosophical debate.

The mirror image of an IP Address is the Domain Name. In a virtual realm till today there is no simpler method to "ground claim" than <IP mapped to Domain Name>.

Identity construction is a complex process in which people develop self-definition. Internet enables online Identity reconstruction as well.

ICANN is doing well in meeting these challenging demands in a multi-stakeholder mode and it has seen many passing clouds and weathered several storms in the past 25 years.

I also think because of social media, a lot of businesses and individuals do not need domains as they used to be. Another factor is the blockchain domains which are forever (I am yet to personally try it).

The big question is what does the future hold for the survival of ICANN?

Yes, but one that many of us have been warning about for quite
a while. I don't think the ICANN community can count on ever
increasing revenues (and thus resources), despite what some
people seem to have been thinking).

Of course, some of us think the "domain business" shouldn't
have been a business in the first place...
