Thanks for this Olga. You have highlighted very important points for the
team to consider.
Having gone through the program and having been part of the selection
committee, I would say that the program gets exceptional applicants. I
don't know why we don't retain them, and I totally wouldn't blame them.
Nextgen is somewhat an enclosed program during ICANN meetings and the
participants get limited interactions with the ICANN community. So one
meeting is not enough for them to get integrated into ICANN policy
processes. I think that's why ambassadorship in. The idea of mentors would
help to get the nextgeners into some of the policy conversations months
prior to ICANN meeting. Of course ICANN learn should also be included as a
mandatory part of their application, just like the fellowship program.
Finally, if the program should take an academic approach (requiring that
the applicants are enrolled in academic institutions), then the purpose of
the program should be to encourage students to choose ICANN topics for
their academic work. But i'm not sure how this will work out in terms of
adding participation in PDP processes. I'm also worried about the program
adding a pool of pure academics rather than a diverse group.
