IGF Climate Change

Greetings to all

As an introduction to the subject I would like to share a video about the
real consequences of climate change https://youtu.be/pBZcQ6cn7RE  (please
do not comment on the video within this topic), from my country Venezuela
in which it is beginning to be affected by climate change and the main
reason why which I respond with my point of view, as expressed by Nick.

I have had the opportunity to work firstly on issues of sustainability,
sustainable development and climate change, since GIZ has a huge amount of
projects aimed at these areas and the mitigation of climate change in more
than 50 countries around the world and I can Talk about the subject with
ownership.

For those who do not know, all the combined computing of the planet
produces 2% of CO2, causing climate change. (according to UN data)

While it is interesting that this IGF wanted to make it a little more true
from the point of view of climate sustainability (but not the IGF, from a
shared responsibility point of view).

Let's start from the technical point of view:
 - IETF: I share the point of view provided by Alejandro Acosta about the
need to take energy efficiency as a focal point of work (unfortunately it
has not gone to large discussions has only been an off-list issue in some
ietf, one that was in Germany where I participate in one of those
discussions).

If we evaluate, in numbers; please, see on the page of past meetings of the
IETF the number of people who move to those events versus countries
represented (in most cases they exceed the ICANN events). Also events such
as RIPE have a high number of attendees who mobilize versus represented
countries.

- ICANN: It is true that it does not have a central axis aimed at
mitigation and sustainability in contrast to the issue of climate change.
But if those who attend these events, whether face-to-face or virtual, do
not press for those changes, it will not be possible for that vision
regarding climate change to be assumed as part of ICANN's strategic vision.

I read that some Criticize the issue of ICANN events (whose arguments
Aydeen has made in this discussion, I agree on some points and that
directly affect the main civil society affected by climate change). since
many times the issues related to civil society have no remote participation.

- IGF: In my experience with the topic of climate change, in the IGF of
2013, there was a topic about climate change, I was the only assistant to
the subject of an area where climate change begins to have visible effects,
the rest were developed countries (we were only 7 people from 4 countries);
In the same way, it happened with the theme of smart cities. I was the only
one in an undeveloped country, the rest were 4 developed countries.

My proposal regarding the steps to follow:

- Climate change should be an issue that is promoted from national and
regional Internet governance initiatives, in order to create a better
understanding of the importance of climate change and how to plan a
mitigation agenda on the use of technology Its impact on our environment.

- Boost from the various Internet axes (Technical, Political and Social) on
the relevance of creating an agenda in conjunction with a realistic
projection, (perhaps the UN 2030 agenda serves as an example); but closer
in terms of time no more than 5 years for the visions of IGF, IETF, ICANN
and other entities to be completed

- Promote that new technologies contribute to design tools or promote
initiatives that allow progress in mitigating climate change (at the
technical level)

Whose axis of this year will be the projects related to climate change (

The IGF space would be an excellent opportunity to give visibility to
potential projects as well as the initiatives within the last IGFs.

- Promote within the MAG that IGF events share the objectives of the 2030
agenda effectively, by optimizing the use of event energy and CO2
compensation mechanisms.

- I suggest to MAG, that if a space is available on the Zero Day of the
IGF, they can organize a small space and invite GIZ which is headquartered
in Berlin, inviting them to give a talk with their large panel of experts
on the change climate. They will surely be interested in participating and
contributing a valuable point of view.

Finally, it is good to highlight some points that I see that many are not
clear.

- Climate sustainability ≠ sustainability of the IGF.
- The digital divide and the face-to-face or remote participation in the
igf.
  Many of us understand that the digital divide and remote participation go
hand in hand for better or worse, based on my experience many people will
not have the opportunity to participate even remotely and less in person
because of the costs of traveling (apart from the incidence of CO2) That is
why it seems absurd to me that many limit themselves to proposing as I have
heard first hand in other instances that it is not good for X or Y
organization to send x number of people to an IGF.

Because many of those regularly attend these events, nor do they mind
having a shared responsibility for mitigating climate change.

Unfortunately, not all of us can be like Greta that I wish we could defend
those who are directly affected by present and future inactions that have
no practical effect in curbing or mitigating climate change.

And ultimately, I call on everyone to reflect on how our habits impact the
climate, because to demand large and transversal changes; We must first
collaborate on a personal level with a sum of small changes that we can all
contribute from the invididual.

I hope that serves something and can help improve the debate.

That is why I invite you to create a new thread focusing solely on the
issue of climate change within the IGF in a depoliticized way and without
agendas. For we will be replicating what has been seen this week about
climate change within the UN during the annual assembly this past week,
something that many criticize via social networks.
