Proposed Letter to ICANN

Hi,

I also support this letter as originally drafted by Milton (but I did reinforce one of the demands with a suggestion of my own), but don’t agree to the edits by Mitch asking for the sale to be halted should the 3 demands not be met, and would prefer the two sections asking this be removed.

For one thing, I’m not convinced that the sale is a bad thing for ISOC, PIR or non-commercial registrants of .org. There’s a lot of fear-mongering going on about this sale, which raise concerns that I believe are very unrealistic and will never be realized, unless the objective of Ethos is to run PIR into the ground after spending USD 1.135 billion on it.

Also, if ICANN doesn’t agree to the 3 demands in this letter, which are really good ones imo, why in the world would we expect them to agree to halt the sale altogether?! Of course we don’t. My only takeaway from adding this demand here is that at some point, an article on some news site or blog post will feature the NCSG joining the campaign to halt the sale, while little to no attention will be directed to the more relevant demands in the letter. Those demands are more technical and nuanced than simply halting the sale, but unfortunately not nearly as sexy or click-baity as #SaveDotOrg.

I’m not at all comfortable with this, and believe that it conflates the primary objective (which should be the ONLY objective) of the letter, which is not to halt the sale, nor raise concerns over ISOC’s more than questionable choices on how it handled the sale. The demands in the letter need to be focused on protecting the interests of non-commercial registrants in the .org (as well as the .ngo and .ong) space, period.

Thanks.

Amr
