Perhaps someone should reach out to Veni (I know him only a little) to make it clear that the community has the viewpoint?  Or perhaps more importantly, the overall community (NCSG and the other SGs and ACs) should do something to make it clear to the Board that we hope Veni is there to say “not us” rather than “we can help.”

Hopefully they have joined to make the case for why the technical community should not be involved in content regulation. But I fear I'm giving them too much benefit of the doubt. There should be transparency and community involvement in these important discussions, but sadly I know there won't be, and all we can probably hope for is a vague blog post after the fact.

Thank you Sam. We are championing for ICANN not to become a content regulator and ICANN staffer get appointed to EC initiative on fake news and online disinformation. I really wonder why. Why should ICANN be even involved with this?

The European Commission (EC) has appointed 39 experts to a new High Level Group (HLEG) on fake news and online disinformation.

It comprises representatives of the civil society, social media platforms, news media organisations, journalists and academia.

Professor dr. Madeleine de Cock Buning is nominated to chair the Group.

 

The ICANN person in the HLEG  is Veni Markovski, currently ICANN's Vice-President for UN engagement, based in New York.
