That is such a great idea Sam – so good that I completely understand why it has been rejected. :) Never do what is right in the long-run if it means you can’t profit in the short-term!

Earlier, when the sum was more modest I and others suggested that it should be placed in an endowment for continuous use over time, and not be treated as a one opportunity windfall. An endowment with a charter, a terms-of-reference, and an independent funding committee bound by the charter and terms of reference could produce good long term results. There was not much support for the idea at that time. Too many hands that want to dip into the pot now, that seems to be the challenge.

+10!

Regardless of what the auction fee might have been, my point was more that we are now sitting on a quarter of a billion dollars, and I distinctly remember in Helsinki the GAC floating the possibility of this money being used to fund their independent secretariat. That's certainly a very understandable objective, from their perspective.
I'm curious as to what the New gTLD Auction Proceeds Drafting Team is up to, and how their work differs from that of the Cross-Community Working Group on New gTLD Auction Proceeds Drafting Team (is it superseding the former?). When I looked at the membership for the former, I see there are 18 community members and 16 staff on the working group. That seems a little disproportionate to me.
Given how much money is at stake, that these proceeds are set to increase further (with the auctions for .hotel, .inc, .mail., .llc etc), and how transformative these funds could be if suitably allocated, I think we should be highly involved in this process so that its allocation is more community-driven. I'm happy to put my hand up and to volunteer here. I have no doubt that there's a piece of the puzzle that I'm missing (is WG membership restricted?), as I will be the first to admit I am new to this community, so if I am mistaken and these funds are in safe hands... let me know. But if we are stretched and not as involved in monitoring the progress of these working groups as we may like to be, please let me know how I can help. Thanks!

What are the costs you're talking about? Looking at past auction proceeds <https://links9.mixmaxusercontent.com/aMjjKHWxnLSD3SEwj/l/jAOjQGVrCV1bw6Aby?messageId=CzRzo0ZHvRMiBWE8l&rn=IyUTV1QTlERtc0UD5kI&re=gI1RWZuIXez5idyV2c0NXasB0UTV1QTlERtc0UD5kI> , the auctioneer Power Auctions LLC doesn't appear to be taking a cut of more than 0.25%. Which would suggest ICANN is getting at least $130 million here. I might be mistaken, however! Happy to be corrected if so.

There has to be at least $250 million in there now, if not more? It would be great to hear from our colleagues on the New gTLD Auction Proceeds Drafting Team as to where in their work plan they are at. These funds could be truly transformative for different stakeholder groups and projects if suitably allocated…
Thanks,

Hi James,
Thanks for raising awareness of this. I am very interested in the outcome of this topic as well, as I understand there is at least $60m in funds currently on hand from auction proceeds (a figure inevitably going to grow). I need not mention how transformative this could be for different stakeholder groups and projects if suitably allocated. Who is representing the NCSG on the drafting team for this exceptional situation?
Best wishes,
Ayden

This is critical work and I want to make sure we are giving sufficient input into this process.
