Hi everyone,
I am accepting the GNSO council nomination and please find my statement
below:
I am based in North America, and originally from Iran.
I have been active at NCSG for a long time, been on GNSO council since
2025, and the policy committee chair since 2026, and here are some of the
initiatives I have led at NCSG:
1. Establishing human rights impact assessment sessions at ICANN: this
started some years ago and then we frequently held HRIA sessions on
different topics at ICANN.
2. Advocating for proportionality, reasonableness, transparency at the
council: I have been involved with drafting teams and small teams in the
council infusing NCSG's human rights values and access to domain names from
the beginning. I also drafted the first retroactive human rights impact
assessment of transfer policy and helped with the first official Latin
Diacritics human rights impact assessment.
3. I also led the work on GAC communique human rights impact assessment
that I will continue in my own capacity.
4. RDRS transparency and law enforcement conversations: I facilitated
incorporating transparency features for law enforcement requests in RDRS
and facilitated sessions with NCSG on authentication.
There is a lot of work to be done in the next few years in terms of
bringing more transparency and accessibility, remedy and protecting access
to domains and freedom of speech to ICANN and its policies. And there is a
lot of unfortunate resistance. With the help of Rafik and others we have
been able to make tangible improvements. Voting for me means I can help
advance this work further as the world is increasingly turning its back on
freedom of speech, access, transparency and generally human rights!
I founded DigitalMedusa <https://digitalmedusa.org/> five years ago to
provide people with unfettered access to technology. I work with a host of
commercial and noncommercial entities and receive grants for my work. When
I receive funding to work on a domain name governance issue I update my
SOI.
If you have any questions about my work or candidacy, please do let me
know.
Best regards,
Farzaneh
