[Ncsg-discuss] Latin diacritics

Dear all,

The Latin Diacritics PDP WG had a meeting today.

I'll highlight two issues discussed:

* What happens when someone applies for an ASCII GTLD and one or more
diacritical versions of it and then either valuntarily decides to drop
some of the domains or some of them are rejected on some basis?

There's no problem as long as at least two domains remain and one of
them is the ASCII one, and apparently it's also fine if only the ASCII
one remains, but it's not clear if only one non-ascii domain remains.
There was initial consensus that proceeding with one LD domain only in
case of voluntary withdrawal of the ASCII one should be allowed, but
then it was argued it should not be allowed in case the ASCII one is
rejected on some grounds (GAC advice or whatever).

* Should non-Unicode-decomposable diacritical characters defined as
"LATIN SMALL LETTER [A-Z] WITH ..." like ø, ł, ƈ and the like be
allowed. I presume nobody is surprised to hear that I championed
allowing them. :-) There wasn't much time to discuss the issue, but
discussion will continue next week.

If someone could suggest examples of languages using such
characters it would be helpful. I could provide a list of
affected characters it anyone wants them, but generally
they're letters with stroke, hook or tail.
