But some questions. First, you've got to know that CSG and NCSG have typically been unable to agree on who is a good board member because of their different interests. While the way you formalized a search committee is pretty good, what happens to bring the recommendations of the two search committees into convergence? (I dare not use the word 'consensus')

I like the idea of a more open process. I think 6 people might be too big for the search committee.  How many of them will actually be able to do anything? Why do you need that many? I would recommend half that size.

Whoever is on that NCSG search committee had better be prepared for some tough bargaining and should be keeping an eye out for candidates who are truly neutral or equally solicitous of the needs of both SGs.

You should be interviewing candidates about their policy positions, not just their knowledge of ICANN...

Hi NCSG,

As you know, board seat 14 is a board seat that the GNSO Non-Contracted Party House (NCPH) ( in which the NCSG belongs to) appoints. According to the NCPH adopted procedures for appointing board seat 14 (attached for reference), the house must eight months before the deadline given by ICANN - determine the following:

  *   If the entire House is happy to reappoint the incumbent, then the House proceeds to appoint the incumbent
  *   If the incumbent will not be reappointed by acclamation, seven months before - each SG appoints its members and alternates for the search committee and the incumbent enters the pool of candidates.

This is to inform you that the NCSG Policy Committee has taken the position that the house should not reappoint the incumbent by acclamation, but rather to initiate the search and appointment process in which the incumbent will also be part of. As a result, the NCPH has agreed to open the appointment process and has asked each SG/C to appoint its members to the search committee.

The PC will be putting out a call for volunteers to the search committee shortly in a separate email.
