I am resending the notes that I sent regarding the election, to help 
clarify the confusion that is being discussed.  Please note that I 
provided a link to the Charter.  If folks had questions, they could have 
started asking them on April 24th, after they followed the link in the 
email to the Charter.

I would like to stress that I am very serious about the need to get NEW 
people into elected positions.  I did not nominate myself, nor campaign 
to get nominated.  As Milton suggested in his email, the idea that folks 
are pressing me to continue as a leader at ICANN is indeed laughable.  
Tapani nominated me without asking me first, and I waited till the end 
of the nominations period to accept.  I accepted because we would not 
have had the requisite number of candidates if I had refused, which 
means the EC of the NCSG would have to appoint someone.  I prefer the 
elections process as a mechanism to choose our leaders, although I agree 
that the NCSG-EC appointment option is a valid and carefully constructed 
option to use in exceptional cases.

When Elsa dropped out of the race, I encouraged the EC to consider 
opening up nominations to get more candidates, and I recused myself from 
the decision because I was a candidate, and under the circumstances NOT 
extending the nominations period assured me of a seat.  Frankly, had 
Nadira stayed in the race I would have stepped aside and let new people 
take the positions. As Milton has suggested, I can step aside in the 
future and permit the EC to select another woman.  I have worked very 
hard over the past 7 years for this organization, and recently the 
friction has on most occasions overshadowed the joy.  It is time for me 
to move on, but it is also crucial to this organization that people work 
hard on the actual work that we need to do here.  With our great 
neighbour to the south exploding with race riots, the economies of the 
world crumbling in the face of COVID restrictions, and the privacy and 
civil liberties world I operate in correctly focused on the prospect of 
a quantum leap in surveillance as a result of COVID tracking, it is a 
little hard to stay focused on DNS issues. I am willing to stay on a 
little longer and finish some of the work I tried to do.  I would also 
like to help others get up to speed, if they would only ask.  We need a 
mentorship program.

And we need to have people care enough to organize candidates and get 
them to train, and run for office.

I am resending my earlier note from April 24th concerning the upcoming 
elections for GNSO Council and NCSG Chair.  Here are the timelines for 
our activities as a stakeholder group, related to those elections.  
Please note that the check in period is well advanced, and you should 
check in now if possible.  If you have not received a checkin notice 
from Maryam Bakoshi, please reach out to her OFFLIST.  I have included 
her in cc separately, for your convenience.  Please remember that this 
year elections for NCSG, NCUC and NPOC elections are all going on at the 
same time, and you need to pay attention to each separately depending on 
your membership.

7 May - Check in begins

14 May - 28 May: Nomination period

28 May: Deadline for nomination acceptance and candidate statement.

29 May or 01 June: Meet the candidates call / Check in ends.

02 June: Voter roll finalized

03 June - 17 June: Voting

18 June: Results announced

We need to elect four councilors, and the NCSG Chair.  I have listed all 
of our current councilors, for your convenience, so you can see the 
regional distribution.  As you know, we strive for gender balance and 
regional distribution, with no more than two candidates from a region as 
far as possible.

As you can see, we have only two weeks for the nomination period, and it 
started today!!  Please help us  find suitable candidates interested in 
filling these volunteer positions.  I would like to encourage you all to 
consider applying and am happy to answer any questions from you 
concerning the roles and responsibilities.  I am sure that all the 
councillors listed would also be happy to answer any questions about 
what the jobs entail on Council, so I have put them in cc for your 
convenience as well.
