Topics to Discuss with the Board at ICANN67: CaNCUN

Actually Sam according to the current Registry Transition Process that governs this decision, this is a staff decision not a board one, although I expect it will be referred to the board due to the level of the discussion, so I think that Goran is critical to both sides of the coin.

Raoul,

That might be a good idea but keep two things in mind. The first is that the ICANN Board is the main decision maker here. I am keen to hear from them since there are clearly lessons to be learned by the Board. The second is that while the Board makes the decision here (with/without stakeholder consusltation???) Göran's team would probably take the lead in figuring out draft language for proposed changes to the registry contract, changes that would make the sale more "public interest" friendly, no matter who the buyer is. Göran might have views on the first issue (Board learning) but should have more focused comments in the second issue.

I wonder if this would also be worth asking at 1on1 with Göran on Monday? It seems by far the biggest issue right now and it might be useful to get different views from different parts of the administration. I think the second hottest issue should perhaps be Verisign trying to shorten their moratorium on raising prices and this kind of trend, where ICANN is facilitating raising prices on using the legacy TLDs, making it less accessible and free.

I would like to suggest that the following topic be considered for a discussion with the ICANN Board.

  * What lessons have been learned by stakeholders and the Board in the matter of the proposed sale of PIR and the .org registry?
I pose the question because I believe that how the process has been handled constitutes a real threat to ICANN's reputation, and viability, as a multistakeholder organization.
