This blog claims to have obtained an email from the CEO of the Internet Society that "identifies the three families that have come together to buy .ORG. They are all American and they are all Republican. The proud new owners of the .ORG domain are the Johnsons, the Perots and the Romneys."

I cannot confirm the authenticity of this email, but if true, this offers some insights into who is funding the acquisition of the Public Interest Registry.
