The Wall Street Journal has a piece today on the PIR sale, noting the real-world consequences of a price increase on a .org domain given that registrants are, for all practical purposes, entrenched to their existing domain names. This organization with five .org domains estimates it would cost them $50,000 to change to another gTLD.

While the cost to acquire a .org domain name is relatively low, nonprofit users say that increases in annual renewal fees can hamper their ability to fulfill their missions and that changing to a new domain, should .org become no longer affordable, would require significant expenses.

“It’s not a simple flip,” said Linda Taliaferro, chief executive of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, a professional association in Alexandria, Va., with five .org addresses, the oldest of which dates back to 1999. She estimates it would cost at least $50,000 to transfer them to new domains and reproduce all of the nonprofit’s print materials accordingly. “It would be highly disruptive to the organization and confusing for our members,” she said.
