I just stumbled across this article, which I am sharing for information purposes:

I found this quote from ICANN interesting and relevant to our other thread:

"Existing domain registrants are also afforded some protection in the event of price increases," added Cyrus Namazi, Icann's head of global domains division. "They must be given a minimum six-month notice of any price increase and can renew their registrations for as many as 10 years prior to the change taking effect, thus enabling a registrant to lock in current prices for up to 10 years in advance of a pricing change"

I wonder if this is a adequate safeguard? The process of registering and remembering when your domain names expire/need renewal can be confusing to the average registrant, and not every registrant always receives renewal notifications. For some non-profits with larger portfolios of .org domains, they may need to budget for bulk renewals for 10 years for their entire portfolio, which is not going to happen overnight.
