As a advocate of FOSS for over two decades, I would say that the real
culprit is the lack of diversity on the Desktop.

Having said that, I'd recommend that whoever can do so should move into
FOSS, which I find is inherently more secure (I was an MS-DOS and Windows
programmer from the late 80s, and moved to Linux in the late 90s). I
realize that my statement is contentious, but certainly not new (we gave
been arguing this for the last 20 years).

Having over 80% of systems in a single OS makes the enterprise very
vulnerable, considering that *all* software contains inadvertent or
deliberate bugs/features such as backdoors (in this case, apparently put
there by MS for NSA).

While backups are a great idea, pls note that backups on infected systems
may themselves be infected and/or encrypted.

I don't see any way to 'eliminate' these kind of threats, but we can
perhaps learn to manage them.
