SUMMARY


This week; in Germany, government has called for fast internet for all by 2025 as part of the goals to be discussed at the G20 Digital Ministers Meeting on digitisation, taking place in Duesseldorf on 6-7 April. Also, Germany's Cabinet on Wednesday approved a new bill that punishes social networking sites if they fail to swiftly remove illegal content such as hate speech or defamatory fake news.

On online abuse, Europe overtook North America last year as the world's biggest host of websites containing child sexual abuse images, according to a study by a British internet watchdog group published on Monday.

On partnership, The Online Trust Alliance (OTA)<http://www.otalliance.org> and the Internet Society (ISOC)<https://www.internetsociety.org> announced that the two global non-profit organizations have combined resources, expanding the reach and impact of the Internet Society to a broader group of stakeholders and industry members. Moreover, "the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) supported the adoption of draft copyright licensing rules relating to broadcasters’ online transmissions and retransmissions."
In the U.S, President Donald Trump is extending by one year special powers introduced by former President Barack Obama that all the government to issue sanctions against people and organizations engaged in significant cyberattacks and cybercrime against the U.S.
On privacy, "Amidst U.S. Congress approval of legislation reversing Internet privacy rules, Major U.S. Internet providers, Comcast, Verizon and AT&T, have come out stating that they would not sell customers’ individual internet browsing information".
On net neutrality, "FCC chairman Ajit Pai has briefed telecom trade associations on his plans to scale back net neutrality rules, The Wall Street Journal reports<https://www.wsj.com/articles/fcc-chief-ajit-pai-develops-plans-to-roll-back-net-neutrality-rules-1491527590>. Pai’s plans will apparently maintain the basic concept of net neutrality, but will move the enforcement of the rules back to the Federal Trade Commission, rather than the FCC."
On e-commerce, The Trump administration has criticized China on a number of trade issues in its recent Foreign Trade Barriers report<https://ustr.gov/about-us/policy-offices/press-office/reports-and-publications/2017/2017-national-trade-estimate> including cloud computing restrictions, Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Domain Name Rules.
On infrastructure, aiming to strengthen its ties to the Asia-Pacific region, Google is now invested in five submarine cables serving the region.
In addition this week see Sir TIM BERNERS-LEE wins ACM 2016 Turing Award.
on Internet access,in the days surrounding Ecuador’s closely contested April 2 primary election, online activists and digital rights groups witnessed a wave of social media account suspensions and technical attacks that they suspect were politically motivated.
