Hi all

As you may have seen some weeks ago, a call was made for expressions of
interest to represent the NCSG, NCUC and NPOC in the newly created GNSO
Standing Selection Committee (SSC). The SSC has the following
responsibilities:

/The SSC is tasked, as requested by the GNSO Council, to 1), where
applicable, prepare and issue calls for applications related to the
selection or nomination of candidates for ICANN structures such as ICANN
review teams as well as structures related to the Empowered Community,
2) review and evaluate all relevant applicants/candidates, 3) rank
candidates and make selection/appointment recommendations for review and
approval by Council and 4) communicate selections to all interested
parties./

NCSG, NCUC and NPOC have 3 slots between them on the SSC. There were
five expressions of interest: Renata, Kris, Poncelet, Ed and Rafik.

As members of the NCSG PC Ed, Rafik and Poncelet recused themselves from
the selection process. Tapani also recused himself.

The remaining members of the NCSG PC (Ayden, Juan Manuel, Marilia,
Martin, Stefania, Stephanie and I) met last week to review, discuss and
hopefully agree our slate of three members for the SSC. At the meeting
we agreed that Renata and Poncelet should hold two of the three places
in the Committee and communicated our selection to ICANN staff. Renata
and Poncelet have since represented us at the first meeting of the SSC.
While Kris had significant experience, and we appreciated him putting
his name forward, we agreed his profile was not as suited for the roles
as the other candidates.

Due to poor connectivity and the lack of time we did not get to a
discussion about the third slot - between Ed and Rafik. The same group
of NCSG PC members are meeting this week to continue our
deliberations. It is our goal to announce our decision on the third
slot of the SSC by CoB Friday. We will be following the same process as
we did for Renata and Poncelet: a discussion of the merits of the
candidates according to the information we have and the criteria that
have been developed.

Finally, and importantly, I would like to clear up the following:
contrary to some views expressed on the lists, there is _no_ secret
process or deliberate attempt to exclude. I would also like to say
that I am disappointed that the selection of three individuals to a
relatively mundane committee has become so divisive.

The NCSG PC is working to make sure that this selection process delivers
the best possible representatives to the SSC for the community. Thanks.

Matthew
