<strong>"Accuracy in WHOIS: Defining, Debating, and Aligning on Proportionate Approaches"</strong></p>
<p><strong>Session Description:</strong><br>
Accuracy of domain name registration data, commonly referred to as "WHOIS/RDDS data", remains a contested concept within ICANN processes. This cross-community session invites all stakeholder groups to share perspectives, experiences, and expectations surrounding accuracy requirements in WHOIS/RDDS data.</p>
<p>Different communities define accuracy in very different ways. For the Noncommercial Stakeholder Group (NCSG), accuracy must be limited to <em>contactability</em>, to avoid unnecessary interference with privacy and expression rights. In contrast, some other stakeholders often advocate for <em>identifiability</em> of registrants, viewing accuracy as a means of attribution and enforcement. Security-focused groups such as the SSAC have highlighted risks and tradeoffs in SAC129, including the need for clarity in what "accuracy" means in varying use cases and whether existing policies provide sufficient mechanisms for achieving appropriate levels of data reliability. But when discussing all this at ICANN, we should not lose sight of its limited mission. </p>
<p>The session aims to:</p>
<ul>
<li>
<p>Map the diverse interpretations of “accuracy” across communities and allow them to understand each others concerns and perspectives</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>Discuss how proportionality and rights-respecting principles can guide accuracy efforts, particularly under applicable data protection and privacy standards and considering ICANN's mission;</p></li><li><p>Discuss what other principles should be applied when discussing accuracy </p></li>
</ul>
<p>The session aims to foster open dialogue across diverse perspectives including registrars, registries, technical experts, civil society, and government representatives, intellectual property and businesses, ALAC and others to help shape a common understanding of what proportionate and effective accuracy policies could look like in the evolving DNS landscape. </p><p>This will be a truly cross-community session and it's not an NCSG session, if approved, stakeholders interested will join to shape the session. </p></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:arial,sans-serif"><br></div><br clear="all"></div><div><div dir="ltr" class="gmail_signature" data-smartmail="gmail_signature"><div dir="ltr"><div><font face="verdana, sans-serif">Farzaneh </font></div></div></div></div><br></div><br><div class="gmail_quote gmail_quote_container"><div dir="ltr" class="gmail_attr">On Thu, Jul 10, 2025 at 2:49 AM Rafik Dammak <<a href="mailto:rafik.dammak@gmail.com">rafik.dammak@gmail.com</a>> wrote:<br></div><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0px 0px 0px 0.8ex;border-left:1px solid rgb(204,204,204);padding-left:1ex"><div dir="ltr"><div dir="ltr"><div dir="ltr"><div><br clear="all"></div><div><div dir="ltr" class="gmail_signature"><div dir="ltr"><div>hi all,</div><div><br></div><div>tomorrow 11th July is the deadline for the input on cross-community sessions to have both about reviews and sharing cross-community session proposals with the rest. </div><div>initial comments from ccNSO and RySG is for having both sessions on reviews and not supporting any other proposal (interesting to see RySG shutting down any talk about accuracy).</div><div><br></div><div>Best,</div><div>Rafik</div><div><br></div></div></div></div></div><br><div class="gmail_quote"><div dir="ltr" class="gmail_attr">Le jeu. 3 juil. 2025 à 13:48, Rafik Dammak <<a href="mailto:rafik.dammak@gmail.com" target="_blank">rafik.dammak@gmail.com</a>> a écrit :<br></div><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0px 0px 0px 0.8ex;border-left:1px solid rgb(204,204,204);padding-left:1ex"><div dir="ltr"><div>hi all,</div><div><br></div><div>sharing here the summary of the production call. <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US"><u></u> <u></u></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">The proposed block schedule (see attached) has been updated with an additional proposed community session on Thursday, in addition to the session already scheduled on Monday. This proposal reflects the importance of the
topic of Reviews that was evident at ICANN83. By having a second community session on the final day, following the traditional Constituency Day meetings and joint sessions, the thought was that ICANN84 would provide a productive opportunity for the Board and
community to advance the work. It was agreed that there will need to be inter-sessional preparations and discussions to enable the work to move forward expeditiously, as well as a possible Prep Week session.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US"><u></u> <u></u></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">A few other topics were proposed as potential plenary ideas for a community session. It was noted that the overall schedule may be sufficiently flexible to allow for some topics to be hosted by specific SOAC groups as
open plenaries, which is already the practice in one or two groups. The main idea is to make sure that any community sessions and other plenary-type sessions are confirmed and placed on the block schedule prior to the opening of the Event Management System
request period, to allow for maximum flexibility and for each group to decide how it wishes to schedule its own sessions.<u></u><u></u></span></p>
