Colleagues, please forgive any cross-posting,

Attached you will find a letter that a number of civil society
groups are looking to send Facebook regarding its
long-standing and contentious real-name policy. The letter
follows on a recent and seminal decision from the hamburg DPA,
finding that the policy violated data protection laws.

As a side note, real name policies are a serious problem.
Entities like facebook adopt them because they want to be an
identity management platform and info-exchange hub for a range
of online interactions where it's required a 'real name' even
though social networking itself does not. To the extent they
are able to become such hubs, a real name policy on a platform
like facebook undermines anonymity on the Internet more
generally. But it also leads to real harm just for those
engaging on various activities on the platform itself
including, at times, to arbitrary detention and torture: <a

Names attached to facebook profiles are also used by
intelligence agencies as a means of identifying all traffic
associated with a particular IP address through intel
resources comparable to GCHQ's MUTANT BROTH: <a

We would all be better off if this policy were reconsidered.
