I pressed Fadi pretty hard to publicly agree to what Rick from WEF been saying all over for a half year, i.e. that the main purpose is to be a project facilitation platform rather than a mechanism for proposing governance norms/policies, which would be inappropriate, and the fear of which has generated negative reactions. I also suggested that the “solutions” language on the website should be reworked to make clear to make this clear and delete references to policy and regulatory recommendations as possible outputs, and he said they would. Virgilio agreed as well. </div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">On the basis of these assurances from the trinity, I went ahead and applied for one of the academic slots, as Wolfgang had done. I did not seek any ‘endorsements’ given that there are 3 GigaNet (academic) candidates and civil society seems so divided, including here. Hopefully that doesn’t work against me but whatever.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">As they were slow to do anything about the website text I also followed up with the trinity and pushed harder them to make changes. In consequence, I’ve just been contacted by the <a href="http://CGI.br" class="">CGI.br</a> person who is staffing the initiative asking for input on a revised text, hopefully that will be posted soonish.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">I also did a call yesterday with an academic group (the Gov Lab at New York U.) that is doing one of the initial projects, a mapping exercise of IG issues and institutions that is supposed to feed into providing the sort of informational clearinghouse functionality I’ve argued for e.g. at the Istanbul IGF and in the little book we did on NETmundial roadmap implementation. <a href="http://thegovlab.org/do-we-need-a-map-on-the-road-to-distributed-internet-governance-findings-from-interviews/" class="">http://thegovlab.org/do-we-need-a-map-on-the-road-to-distributed-internet-governance-findings-from-interviews/</a> Inevitably, there are issues with this project to be worked out over time, but I think it demonstrates the sort of thing the NMI could productively support and which one would think would not be too controversial, as it’s hardly ‘privatizing’ governance discussions or decisions, it’s just trying to create a tool some stakeholders might find useful in searching for information.
