<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">On 14 March 2014 the United States government National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced its intent to transition stewardship of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions to the global multistakeholder community. The NTIA asked the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), as the IANA functions contractor and global coordinator for the Domain Name System (DNS), to convene a multistakeholder process to develop a proposal for the transition. While looking to stakeholders and those most directly served by the IANA functions to work through the technical details, the NTIA established a clear framework to guide the discussion and communicated to ICANN that the transition proposal must have broad community support and address the following four principles:</p>

<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;"><strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">Process</strong></p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">An open call to members of the Internet Society membership and broader community is therefore called, with candidates requested to submit a 250 word statement of interest as well as a separate summary of their relevant qualifications, skills and experience (curriculum vitae). Please submit statement to: <strong>ianacommittee@isoc.org</strong>.</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">As the elected representatives of the Internet Society membership, or selected from its constituency through long-standing processes, and mindful of the compressed timeframe available, the Board of Trustees has determined that it shall undertake processes akin to its usual practice for identifying members of advisory and operational boards. A nominations committee comprising qualified members of its Executive Committee shall call for nominations, review candidate statements and make a recommendation to the Internet Society Board of Trustees meeting to be held 27-28 June 2014.</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">Interviews of shortlisted candidates may be conducted.</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">The nominations committee shall therefore comprise Scott Bradner, Kathryn Brown, Narelle Clark (Chairperson), David Farber, Bob Hinden and Jason Livingood.</p>

<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;"><strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">Criteria</strong></p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">Candidates will be expected to possess:</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">a.  A clear appreciation of the nature of multistakeholder participation and governance including a familiarity with consensus-based decision-making systems;</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">b.  Demonstrated expertise in the technical procedures, practices and administration of the Internet particularly as it relates to the security, stability and resiliency of the Internet, its protocols and operation;</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">c.  Familiarity with the IANA operating model;</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">d.  A solid understanding of the overarching governance and contractual principles;</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">e.  Ability and confidence of the Internet Society community to operate within the broader diplomatic environment;</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">f.  The willingness to devote time and energy to this process; and</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">g.  Other such criteria as deemed appropriate by the nominations committee for effective performance.</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;"><strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">Expectations</strong></p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">The appointed candidate will be expected to act as the direct liaison for the Internet Society community and provide reports to the Board of Trustees and membership on a regular basis and in other forums at the appropriate frequency and as agreed as the process evolves.</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">The Internet Society Board of Trustees reserves the right to disendorse its nominated candidates at any time should they be unable to fulfil the requirements.</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">Selected candidates should initially be prepared to meet in mid-July 2014, tentatively on 16-18 July, to begin developing modes of operation and working methods. ICANN will make available the requisite facilities and resources.</p>

<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">The initial term of appointment will be for twelve (12) months after which time the Board of Trustees may choose to rerun the process or to extend the term.</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;"><strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">Practical</strong></p>
<p style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1.1em; vertical-align: top; border: 0px; background-color: transparent;">It is expected that travel costs will be recoverable for the successful candidate to participate in face to face meetings of the Group. The Internet Society will make available other facilities with which to consult with its membership and expert advisory groups.</p>
